La Diva at Palpitando

We are proud to annouce La Diva as Dj at the Paplitando Milonga, LMDC4, Malmö Friday 1 October.
Do you want to know what makes La Diva tick? Read on...

I have been dancing for eight years. During those years I have always been intrigued by the music. As a tango beginner I knew nothing about orchestras and how they were suppose to sound but my ears sure knew what they liked to hear, so did my body! Some pieces of music inspired me to dance more than others. In the beginning I didn’t think much about the importance of the music as I´ve always been quite musical; it was only a couple of years ago that I started to be really interested in the music. For many years I was dancing mainly in the local milongas until I finally decided to take the step out into the world of festivals, suddenly I was exposed to very good music selected by star Djs. Back home I started to really listen to the music and realized that it didn’t sound as wonderful as it did at the festivals, this awoke my curiosity. The music was the same so were the orchestras. What made the difference? I then started to talk to tango friends, Djs and searched for information on the internet about tango music and how the Djs create an evening. My curiosity grew so I decided that I want to give it a try as a Dj, La Diva was born. La Diva became my nickname because I always wanted the best, the best dresses, the best shoes, the best teachers, the best dances and of course the best music. Really, why accept less than the best? Anyway, I had a great nickname and now I had to prove myself to the tango crowd, so slowly I started to Dj at the local milongas and to my surprise with great success! I got more and more jobs and a lot of attention for my way of Djing. I don´t think I was as good as I am today but good enough to attract the attention of the towns organizers so I started to play at bigger events. I don´t quite remember how I got the invitation to play at La Milonga Del Corazón (LMDC) but I think it was because the organizers Simon and Johanna had the same high quality concept as me. They wanted to create the best festival in the best venue with the best teachers, best dancers and of course the best Djs so they gave me the chance to play at the event. The high quality of LMDC has been acknowledged on the European tango scene and worldwide attracting the best maestros and the best dancers and is proof in itself that you should never compromise on quality. I guess that the recipe for success was that during my research I found out that there are certain rules that the tango Dj needs to follow in order to be able to create a great evening. The rules itself are very simple but not so easy to apply as they are so many! A real Dj works with tandas, and there are rules about how to create a tanda, then you have also to know the dancers and find tandas that are suitable for their level, and you need to find good cortinas and to collect a lot of music so you have a good variety and it costs money! So there are many things to take in consideration and It´s not as easy as people think! The Dj’s job is not about looking down at the computer, the job is to watch what is going on the dance floor and make adjustments to keep the crowd inspired so they perform their best on the dance floor. Also, remember one very important but simple rule - you are there for the dancers, not the other way around. I think one of the tools for development as a tango dancer apart from taking classes is to know the music and to be curious, I don´t mean you have to know all the orchestras and the names of the tangos but be curious about what makes you and your body happy. What inspires you? And refuse to go out and dance to bad music.

I look forward to playing for you at Palpitando milonga, LMDC4, Malmö on 1 October, make sure have lots of energy, together we are going to rock!
